a batch of TOPPS star wars sketch card returns

a completed returned sketch card for clone wars widevision (already bought, paid for and mailed a while ago. i just forgot to post it)

  

and here are my 2 returns for star wars galaxy 5 (the set that just came out). i haven't decided what i am doing with them yet... so don't ask. if they're up for sale or ebay, you'll know later this week.

next up, starwars.com just announced the OTHER thing that will be taking up my time yesterday... an empire strikes back 30th anniversary ART PRINT for starwarsshop.com/acme archives!!!!

lucasfilm has asked 12 artists (including me!) to create a piece that will be turned into a limited edition (giclée on watercolor paper) art print (100 prints of each) depicting a scene from empire strikes back... telling the story in chronological order from start to finish. (there will also be a portfolio available to order that all the prints will fit into if you want to collect the whole set!)

katie's base card art for the TOPPS star wars galaxy 5 set

i did 2 base cards!

yeah!

i already showed the artwork for my wampa room card (as it appeared in star wars insider magazine!)

 it has this quote on the back as to why i chose to do this scene:

"I'm a huge fan of the creatures of Star Wars and the Wampa is right at the top of my list of favorite SW critters. In a deleted scene from Empire,  Han wants to take a shortcut through a room in Empire and Leia tells him 'that's where they keep those creatures'. C-3P0 does something totally out of character and takes the warning sign down, hoping to trick the troopers into going in there. I've ALWAYS wanted to see the scene where the stormtroopers are being attacked by the wampas trapped in this room. I imagine it to be a furry, frantic battle where, of course, the wampas win."

and now my OTHER base card... my cantina scene! yaay!

 and it has the following quote on the back:

"What's more fun than the most wretched hive of scum and villainy on Tatooine? This place is full of characters that have some really elaborate background stories courtesy of the extended universe, every creature in there is worthy of a deeper look. Wuher, the bartender himself, has a tragic story and big dreams to leave Tatooine one day. He's described as a genius when it comes to mixology and is using that skill to win fame and fortune from Jabba the Hutt. i loved drawing these. i hope you enjoy lookin' at 'em!

also, i'm almost done with my fraggle rock story! i'm so excited! i've been having SO MUCH FUN drawing it!!

ypsi ink & stein... NEW LOCATION!

 

Ink & Stein... In STYLE!

ink and stein has been a HUGE success, more successful than any of us have imagined it would be. each month, 15-20+ people come out to draw, chat and have fun with us. it's amazing. 

because of this success, we've got to move our location from the corner brewery to somewhere new. the corner brewery, though ideal in theory, just has not been willing to accommodate our group. they won't reserve us space, they've been rude and overall we're getting feeling that they hate comic book nerds that sit there for hours and drink all their beer and spend lots of money. you'd think an independent brewery would embrace this? well, they don't. 

so we're trying some place new! we've been scouring the ypsi area for another location ... and, you won't believe this, i think we've found a new home at the MARRIOTT. yes. 

a hotel bar. 

man, you'd think i was kidding. i'm not. thinking back to the many conventions where people meet up to casually talk and draw, it seems like a natural fit.... so we're going to try it out!

so... STARTING THIS MONTH. YPSI INK & STEIN IS MEETING AT THE MARRIOTT YPSILANTI AT EAGLE CREST.

i've personally gone over and looked at the space and it's open, full of tables, couches, and lots of space to spread out and draw. instead of a few tables pushed together in a crowded bar, it's all the artists sitting at couches with plenty of space to move around and talk to one another. also, we'll finally be able to hear each other and it'll be bright enough that we can actually see what we're drawing. 

the one drawback... the bar closes at 11 instead of midnight ;P

plus side. cocktails. i also hear that some cougars hang out here every once in a while. maybe they find drawing comics attractive? you'll never know until you come. 

SO. 

for now, i think ink & stein has found a new home. 

 SPREAD THE WORD. 

so please, come out and join us on the LAST SATURDAY of every month... now at the MARRIOTT EAGLE CREST YPSILANTI. 

it goes from 7-11. we can hang out later than that, the bar may be closed, but if you want to hang out next to a fireplace with what's left of your cosmopolitan while you ink a panel, you're welcome to it.

a birthday card a whipped up for ryan's and my friend christa! 

happy birthday christa! (last year she got a tightrope walker/hatbox ghost haunted mansion themed card, this year it's her and brodie from beauty and the beast. oh! whatever disney theme will i choose for next year?)

 

star wars galaxy 5 base card (1 of 2... wampa room)

so grant hipped me to the fact that one of my base cards for the new TOPPS star wars galaxy 5 trading card set is printed on page 71 ofthe new star wars insider magazine!

 

so i'm going to assume it's safe for me to post the art for it :P (i did TWO base cards for this set. i'll share the other one later. 

first, a rare look into my EARLY process... the thumbnail i sent to topps with my idea for the card!
